The newest iteration of the MacBook was announced and it is an interesting problem: buy a very attractive machine at a higher price or look at the Dell XPS range. The MacBook Pro is quite overpriced for the feature set but this is as it always has been/will be.
What to do? Wait - is my advice.
I don't buy Apple hardware on a new platform until a few months have passed to work out the quirks in the hardware and manufacturing process. The only exceptions I have made to this rule have been my iMac (the transition from G5 to Intel was going to run cooler on a well supported reference platform) and the Airport Express I own for streaming music (it is a braindead simple device... but I still worried). The Airport Express is not very good as a standalone wireless router as every time the microwave is turned on the signal drops; interestingly this doesn't happen when it is acting as a client, weird. Works wonderfully well at playing music without interruption though.
In terms of new product risk points for the new MacBook you have:
- new manufacturing process
- new graphics card
- new supporting chipset
- new display
- new display port connection - requiring yet another new adapter dongle
- loss of FireWire - doesn't affect me, others have ranted endlessly about it
I do have to admit the thing looks solid and appears very well designed but I am going to sit this one out until the early adopters find the kinks! A final note when buying laptops from Apple: get the extended AppleCare warranty, laptop repairs can be expensive for the most trivial things!
